40 percent sex workers in Uttar Pradesh are OBCs
Lucknow; As many as 40 percent of the women forced into the flesh trade in Uttar Pradesh belong to the Other Backward Classes (OBCs), reveals a new study carried out by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
A majority of these girls were minors, shows the report prepared in collaboration with a Delhi-based NGO, Shakti Vahini.
Taking a serious note of the finding, Uttar Pradesh Backward Classes Commission chief Jagannath Prasad Yadav has shot off a letter to the state government asking for prompt action to get to the root of the problem and to arrest the trend.
"These facts are horrifying. After all, the state government runs so many schemes for the welfare and upliftment of members of different backward communities, (but) what is happening on the ground level needs to be found out," Yadav told IANS here.
"I have already asked the government to submit a detailed report in this regard, following which our commission will consider suitable and practical solutions to the problem," he said.
